In 1936 he donated the land on York Avenue to which Memorial Hospital moved; Memorial Sloan Kettering has been there ever since.
Overview
John D. Rockefeller Jr. (1874-1960), the philanthropist son of the Standard Oil founder, gave the land that fixed the geography of American cancer care. Memorial Sloan Kettering's history records that in 1936 the hospital began a move to its present location on York Avenue, on land donated by John D. Rockefeller Jr. The move put Memorial Hospital beside the Rockefeller Institute and what became Weill Cornell, creating the medical corridor on Manhattan's East Side in which the Sloan Kettering Institute was later built and where MSK's laboratory towers and outpatient buildings, funded by later donors such as Mortimer Zuckerman and David Koch, now stand. His family's medical philanthropy also built the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research and funded public health worldwide.
