Overview
Mortimer Zuckerman, the real-estate developer and publisher of U.S. News & World Report and the New York Daily News, pledged $100 million to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in May 2006. MSK's announcement called it the largest single commitment by an individual in its history. The gift funded the Mortimer B. Zuckerman Research Center, a 693,000 square foot complex whose 23-storey tower holds sixteen floors of laboratories, designed to nearly double MSK's research capacity and to house the Sloan Kettering Institute's programmes in cancer biology, immunology, structural biology and computational biology. It is the kind of gift that changes what an institution can attempt: space for hundreds of new scientists rather than a single programme.
