Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital / AMPATH Oncology
Kenya's second national referral hospital, in Eldoret, whose AMPATH partnership with North American universities built one of the strongest public cancer programmes in East Africa.
Overview
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital is Kenya's second national referral hospital and the teaching hospital of Moi University School of Medicine. Through AMPATH (the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare), a consortium led by Indiana University with Moi University and other North American partners, it developed a comprehensive oncology programme with medical oncology, paediatric oncology, palliative care, a pharmacy and pathology infrastructure, and the Chandaria Cancer and Chronic Diseases Centre, which added radiotherapy in western Kenya. AMPATH Oncology has published widely on breast and cervical cancer screening, Burkitt lymphoma and Kaposi sarcoma, and on delivering cancer care in low-resource settings.
