Overview
Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre opened in Lahore in 1994, founded by the cricketer and later prime minister Imran Khan and named after his mother, who died of cancer. Funded largely by donations and zakat, it provides comprehensive cancer care, including surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, nuclear medicine and paediatric oncology, to a majority of patients free of charge. A second hospital opened in Peshawar in 2015 and a third in Karachi, and the network runs a large diagnostic laboratory collection system across Pakistan. Shaukat Khanum is accredited by Joint Commission International and hosts a clinical research programme and hospital-based cancer registry.
