Wellcome
One of the world's largest charitable science funders and a founding partner of the Francis Crick Institute and the Wellcome Sanger Institute, home of the COSMIC cancer mutation database.
Established in 1936 from the estate of Henry Wellcome, Wellcome is a politically and financially independent foundation that funds discovery science, and its portfolio underpins cancer research even though it is not a cancer-specific funder. It co-founded the Francis Crick Institute with Cancer Research UK and the Medical Research Council, and it established the Wellcome Sanger Institute, whose Cancer Genome Project produced COSMIC and much of the mutational-signature literature. Wellcome funds investigator awards, clinical research career development and the Human Cell Atlas, and it drove open-access publishing policy through Plan S and Europe PMC.
