The national cancer incidence figures from Egypt's registry programme, the only ones OnCo found: registries in three governorates from 2008 to 2011 put liver, breast and bladder cancer first and projected cancers to nearly treble by 2050.
The National Cancer Registry Program of Egypt stratified the country into Lower, Middle and Upper Egypt and ran a population-based registry in one governorate of each: Damietta (2009 to 2011), Minya (2009) and Aswan (2008), together covering 20.9% of Egypt's population. Abstractors collected data from cancer centres, national tertiary institutions, the Health Insurance Organization, the government-subsidised treatment programme and death records. Regional age-specific rates were applied to the national population to give national incidence, and to projected populations for estimates up to 2050. The authors are from the National Cancer Institute of Cairo University, the South Egypt Cancer Institute of Assiut University and Cairo University's Faculty of Engineering.
These are the national incidence figures Egypt's own registry has published, and IARC's estimates for Egypt are built on subnational rates of this kind. They describe 2008 to 2011, before the national hepatitis C treatment campaign, so the liver cancer share may not describe Egypt today.
