Cornelis J. H. van de Velde
Surgeon who led the Dutch TME trial, proving standardised rectal surgery with radiotherapy cuts local recurrence.
Overview
Cornelis van de Velde led the Dutch TME trial, which showed that total mesorectal excision taught through a national quality programme combined with short-course preoperative radiotherapy reduces local recurrence in rectal cancer, and the Dutch D1-D2 gastric cancer trial that clarified the role of extended lymphadenectomy. He founded the EURECCA registry programme and has been president of ESSO and ECCO.
