Ethan Basch led the randomised trial showing that systematic electronic patient-reported symptom monitoring during chemotherapy improves quality of life, reduces emergency visits and extends overall survival, and the national PRO-TECT trial confirming it in community practices. He developed the PRO-CTCAE toxicity instrument with the NCI and has shaped FDA and ASCO policy on patient-reported outcomes.
