UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center
Where Charles Perou defined the PAM50 intrinsic subtypes of breast cancer; a public university centre with in-house CAR-T manufacturing.
NCI-designated since 1975 and comprehensive since 1990, UNC Lineberger is a public-university cancer centre with a statewide remit across North Carolina. Charles Perou's intrinsic subtypes and the PAM50 assay reshaped breast cancer classification; Norman Sharpless, later NCI director, worked on CDK4/6 and cellular senescence here and co-founded G1 Therapeutics. Gianpietro Dotti and Barbara Savoldo run one of the few academic in-house CAR-T programmes, and Ethan Basch's patient-reported outcome trials changed how symptoms are monitored during chemotherapy. Blossom Damania and Dirk Dittmer lead research on Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus and virus-associated cancers.
