Surgeon-scientist who showed the gut microbiome shapes response to immunotherapy and led early neoadjuvant melanoma trials.
Overview
Jennifer Wargo led the 2018 Science paper showing that gut microbiome composition predicts response to PD-1 blockade in melanoma patients, alongside parallel work from Gustave Roussy and Chicago that founded microbiome-directed immuno-oncology. She led one of the first randomised neoadjuvant immunotherapy trials in melanoma and co-leads the International Neoadjuvant Melanoma Consortium. Her laboratory now studies diet, fibre and microbiome modulation.
