Led SHARP, which made sorafenib the first systemic therapy for liver cancer, and created the BCLC staging system.
Overview
Josep Llovet was principal investigator of SHARP, the 2008 trial showing sorafenib improves survival in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, the first systemic therapy to do so, and co-created the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer staging and treatment algorithm used worldwide. His laboratory defined the molecular classes of HCC and he has led guidelines for the EASL and AASLD. He continues to work on biomarkers for immunotherapy in liver cancer.
