Barcelona haematologist and senior author of CART19-BE-01, the trial that led Spain to authorise a CAR-T made by a public hospital.
Julio Delgado is a haematologist in the Department of Hematology at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona and the FRCB-IDIBAPS research institute, according to the affiliation on his 2026 paper on varnimcabtagene autoleucel in mantle cell lymphoma. He is the senior author of the 2021 Molecular Therapy report of CART19-BE-01, the academic trial of the CD19 CAR-T ARI-0001, in which the measurable residual disease-negative complete response rate at day 100 in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia was 71.1%, and an author of the CARTBCMA-HCB-01 report on the hospital's BCMA CAR-T ARI0002h. He also led the ARI-0001 report in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and Richter's transformation as senior author.
An academic hospital can make a BCMA CAR-T on site and give it with low rates of severe toxicity. Spain's health service now funds ARI0002h beside the commercial BCMA products, which makes the price and supply of a hospital-made product a live comparison rather than a hypothesis.
This is the evidence behind the AEMPS's February 2021 authorisation of ARI-0001 under the hospital exemption, which let a public hospital make and give its own CAR-T to adults with relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The fractionated dosing it introduced is the approach later used for the hospital's BCMA CAR-T.
