Sanford I. Weill
In May 2025 the Weill Family Foundation's $100 million challenge launched a $200 million, ten-year cancer research partnership between UCSF and Stanford, the two big Bay Area cancer centres that usually compete.
Overview
Sanford I. Weill, the former Citigroup chairman, and his wife Joan had given mainly to medical education, including the gifts that named Weill Cornell Medicine, before turning to cancer. UCSF announced on 20 May 2025 a $100 million matching grant from the Weill Family Foundation to launch the Weill Cancer Hub West, a ten-year, $200 million initiative run jointly by the Stanford Cancer Institute and UCSF's Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The hub funds four programmes: engineering CAR-T cells inside the body, AI-guided design of cell therapies, diet and metabolism interventions during treatment, and AI-driven personalised care. The condition that two rival institutions work as one is the point of the gift as much as the money.
