Juice Plus is a capsule of fruit and vegetable concentrates with added vitamins, sold through direct marketing. It raises some vitamin levels in the blood, but in a study of people with head and neck cancer that brought no clinical benefit, and it is not proven to prevent or treat cancer. Its antioxidants may interfere with some chemotherapy.
Juice Plus is a formulation of fruit and vegetable concentrates with additional vitamins, marketed to complement diets low in produce. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary reports that it can raise serum alpha-carotene, vitamin C and folate, with mixed results for other markers, that cardiovascular findings such as homocysteine reduction were not reproducible, and that it is unclear whether it is nutritionally superior to fresh produce. In a study of patients with head and neck cancer it increased serum micronutrients but provided no clinical benefit, and MSK states it has not been proven to prevent or treat cancer and is not a substitute for fresh fruit and vegetables. Gut upset and a hive-like rash were reported in studies, and a 51-year-old woman with endometrial cancer had raised liver tests that normalised over four weeks after stopping it. MSK notes that antioxidant supplements are not recommended during chemotherapy that relies on free radicals.
Concentrated antioxidant micronutrients; raising blood levels has not translated into a clinical outcome.
