Mangosteen is a tropical fruit whose juice and rind extracts are sold as antioxidant health drinks. Laboratory studies show anticancer activity, but no study has tested it in people with cancer, and Memorial Sloan Kettering warns its antioxidants may interfere with some chemotherapy. Severe lactic acidosis was reported after a year of daily juice.
Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana) is eaten in Southeast Asia, and its juice and fruit hull are sold as supplements for antioxidant activity. Memorial Sloan Kettering's About Herbs summary reports that xanthones from mangosteen are cytotoxic, aromatase-inhibiting and anticancer in preliminary data, and may protect against doxorubicin neurotoxicity and cisplatin kidney injury in the laboratory. Human studies are small and concern gum disease, bad breath, weight management, insulin sensitivity and acne; it was ineffective for exercise fatigue and schizophrenia. There is no clinical study in cancer. MSK reports a case of severe lactic acidosis after 12 months of daily mangosteen juice, warns that its antioxidant effects may interfere with anthracyclines, platinum drugs and alkylating agents, notes possible additive immunosuppression with cyclosporine or tacrolimus, and lists effects on several CYP enzymes of unknown clinical significance.
Xanthones such as alpha-mangostin are antioxidant and cytotoxic in cell culture.
