Lithuania has offered PSA testing to men aged 50 to 74 through a population-based programme since 2006; in its first ten years 70% of the men eligible were tested at least once.
Lithuania's population-based Early Prostate Cancer Detection Programme offers PSA testing to men aged 50 to 74. A review of 2006 to 2015 found that coverage reached up to 45.5% of the target population in recent rounds and that 70% were screened at least once in ten years. The share of men with a positive PSA test fell from 16.9% in 2006 to 10.7% in 2014-2015; up to 40.0% of them had a biopsy, of which 42.0% found prostate cancer, and 16,061 prostate cancers were registered within the programme. Screened men were more likely to be diagnosed with organ-confined disease than non-participants. The authors describe the screening practice as unorganised, with low coverage per round (Patasius et al., Journal of Clinical Medicine 2020).
