Brought immunotherapy to nasopharyngeal cancer, an Epstein-Barr-virus-driven cancer common in southern China, and won the first US approval for that disease.
PFS HR 0.52; OS benefit confirmed (HR 0.63) with six-year follow-up showing sustained separation. FDA approval 27 October 2023, the first for NPC in the US; EU approval followed. Parallel trials with camrelizumab (CAPTAIN-1st) and tislelizumab (RATIONALE-309) replicated the effect.
- The treated group had about 48 percent lower chance of the event at any given time (hazard ratio 0.52).

- This is a surrogate endpoint: it measures the cancer being controlled or absent on scans and tests, which often, but not always, translates into living longer.
