C2i Genomics built a blood test that reads the whole genome of tumour DNA fragments to detect leftover cancer after treatment; Veracyte bought the company in 2024 and now sells the approach as TrueMRD.
Overview
C2i Genomics, founded in New York with research roots at the New York Genome Center and the Weizmann Institute, developed a whole-genome approach to minimal residual disease (MRD) detection. Rather than tracking a small targeted panel, it sequences the tumour genome to define thousands of somatic variants and applies AI pattern recognition to low-pass whole-genome sequencing of plasma cell-free DNA, giving sensitive detection from a single blood tube. Veracyte announced a definitive agreement to acquire C2i on 8 January 2024 for $70 million in Veracyte shares at closing plus up to $25 million in performance milestones, extending its diagnostics platform into MRD monitoring. The technology now underpins Veracyte's TrueMRD platform, whose first test, for muscle-invasive bladder cancer, is available to order in the United States, with more cancers planned.
