Carl Zeiss Meditec
Carl Zeiss Meditec makes Intrabeam, a miniature X-ray source used to give a single dose of radiation to the breast tumour bed during surgery, and the Kinevo surgical microscopes whose blue-light and infrared modes make brain tumours glow during resection.
Overview
Carl Zeiss Meditec, the listed medical arm of the Zeiss group formed in 2002, sells ophthalmic devices and neurosurgical visualisation. Intrabeam is a mobile 50 kV X-ray source with spherical applicators placed in the cavity after lumpectomy to deliver intraoperative radiotherapy, the technique tested in the TARGIT-A trial, and its applicators also treat skin, spine and intracranial sites. The Kinevo and Pentero microscopes carry fluorescence modes for 5-aminolaevulinic acid and indocyanine green used in glioma and vascular surgery. OnCo links it to intraoperative radiotherapy and fluorescence-guided surgery.
