Medtronic
Medtronic is the largest medical device company; in cancer care it sells the Hugo surgical robot, Emprint microwave and Cool-tip radiofrequency ablation systems, the O-arm intraoperative imaging and StealthStation navigation, and the GI Genius artificial-intelligence polyp detector.
Overview
Medtronic, founded in Minneapolis in 1949 and domiciled in Dublin since its 2015 merger with Covidien, sells across surgery, cardiology, neuroscience and diabetes. Its oncology-relevant hardware is the Hugo robotic-assisted surgery system, which is CE marked and entering the US market as the first broad rival to da Vinci, the Emprint microwave and Cool-tip radiofrequency ablation systems used for liver, kidney and lung tumours, surgical staplers and energy devices used in most cancer operations, the O-arm cone-beam imaging and StealthStation navigation used in spinal tumour surgery, and GI Genius, the first artificial-intelligence colonoscopy aid cleared in the United States. OnCo links it to surgical robots, thermal ablation, intraoperative imaging and AI polyp detection.
