Deerfield Management
A New York healthcare investment firm that funds companies, runs its own drug discovery labs and a philanthropy arm. It founded and seeded Nuvalent, a lung cancer drug company that GSK agreed to buy for $10.6 billion.
Overview
Deerfield was founded in 1994 by Arnold Snider (Wikipedia) and describes its mission as 'Advancing Healthcare through Investment, Information & Philanthropy'. It invests in private and public companies across life science, medical devices, diagnostics, digital health and services at all stages, and builds companies through Deerfield Discovery and Development (3DC), its company-building R&D engine housed at the Cure building in New York City. Its flagship oncology outcome is Nuvalent: Deerfield's release states that Nuvalent 'is a clinical-stage precision oncology company founded in 2017 by Deerfield in collaboration with' Harvard chemical biologist Matthew Shair, that Deerfield was 'sole founding investor' and seeded the company in 2017, and that Nuvalent has 'two late-stage, potential best-in-class, next-generation, highly selective ROS1 and ALK inhibitors' for non-small cell lung cancer, with GSK agreeing to acquire it for $10.6 billion.
