An MRI dye injected into a vein that is absorbed by healthy liver cells, so spots in the liver that are not normal liver tissue show up clearly. It is used to find and characterise liver tumours.
The FDA label (Bayer, NDA 022090, first approved 3 July 2008) says EOVIST "is indicated for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the liver to detect and characterize lesions in adult and pediatric patients, including term neonates, with known or suspected focal liver disease". The WHO lists it as gadoxetic acid (ATC V08CA10). Like every gadolinium-based contrast agent in the United States, its label carries a boxed warning on the risks of intrathecal use and nephrogenic systemic fibrosis, a thickening of skin and organs seen in people with severe kidney disease.
A gadolinium chelate that shortens the relaxation time of nearby water protons, brightening tissue on MRI. Part of each dose is taken up by working liver cells, so lesions without normal liver cells stand out in the later images.
