Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health
The US agency modelled on DARPA that funds high-risk, milestone-driven health programmes, including adaptive cancer therapy, rapid tumour-removal surgery and early detection.
Created in 2022 within the Department of Health and Human Services, ARPA-H funds programme managers to run time-limited, milestone-based projects that the NIH grant system does not, with an appropriation of roughly $1.5 billion per year in its first years. Cancer-relevant programmes include ADAPT (adaptive therapies that anticipate tumour evolution), POSEIDON (at-home multi-cancer screening), CUREIT (curative immunotherapy), Precision Surgical Interventions (removing all tumour tissue in one operation) and the Cancer Moonshot-aligned biomanufacturing efforts. It works through ARPANET-H hubs in Massachusetts, Texas and Washington and contracts rather than grants. Its model has drawn interest from other countries designing their own ARPA-style funders.
