Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas
The Texas state agency created by voters in 2007 that is the second-largest public funder of cancer research in the US after the NCI.
CPRIT was created by a 2007 Texas constitutional amendment authorising $3 billion in bonds for cancer research and prevention, and voters approved a further $3 billion in 2019. It awards academic research grants, recruits scientists to Texas institutions through Scholar awards, funds prevention and screening services in underserved communities and invests in Texas-based cancer companies through its product development programme. CPRIT funding has helped build programmes at MD Anderson, UT Southwestern, Baylor and other Texas centres and has recruited hundreds of investigators to the state. Its oversight committee and peer-review panels are drawn largely from outside Texas.
