Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre

aka HCPA

Southern Brazil's leading public university hospital, known for cancer genetics, Li-Fraumeni research and one of Brazil's strongest clinical research programmes.

Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre opened in 1971 as the teaching hospital of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul and is one of Brazil's top public research hospitals and a designated high-complexity oncology centre. Its oncology and medical genetics services, under Patricia Ashton-Prolla and colleagues, characterised the high prevalence of the TP53 R337H founder mutation in southern Brazil and built hereditary cancer clinics and registries, and its haematology, paediatric oncology, breast and gastrointestinal cancer programmes contribute to Latin American and international cooperative trials, including through the Latin American Cooperative Oncology Group (LACOG) headquartered in Porto Alegre. HCPA runs a large clinical research centre and a radiotherapy and bone marrow transplant service for the public system.
