A patient organisation founded in 1986 by the parents of a child with Langerhans cell histiocytosis, which supports patients and families with histiocytic disorders worldwide and funds research.
The Histiocytosis Association was started by Jeff and Sally Toughill at their kitchen table in Pitman, New Jersey, after their daughter was diagnosed with Langerhans cell histiocytosis as a baby, according to its organisational history page. They mailed their first newsletter in August 1986, incorporated the association as a New Jersey non-profit in October 1986 and gained 501(c)(3) status in May 1988. Its about page describes a global non-profit that raises awareness of histiocytic disorders, provides educational and emotional support, and funds research; its staff page says it also serves as the secretariat of the Histiocyte Society and runs a grant programme, a podcast and a volunteer ambassador programme. The IRS records it in Pitman, New Jersey.
