Kaiser Permanente Division of Research
The research arm of America's largest integrated health system, whose cohorts and screening programmes generate much of the real-world evidence on cancer screening and prevention.
Founded in 1961 by Morris Collen, the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research in Oakland studies the millions of members of Kaiser Permanente Northern California, and with the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle forms one of the most productive health-services research enterprises in cancer. Its organised colorectal screening programme, studied by Douglas Corley and colleagues, showed that population-wide FIT outreach roughly doubled screening uptake and halved colorectal cancer deaths within the health plan; the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium and the Cancer Research Network have anchored national studies of mammography performance and screening intervals. Kaiser cohorts have measured HPV vaccine effectiveness, aspirin and statin associations with cancer, and survivorship outcomes (the Pathways breast cancer cohort). The division is a leading source of real-world evidence for cancer guidelines.
