Markey Cancer Center, University of Kentucky
Kentucky's NCI comprehensive centre, serving Appalachia where lung and colorectal cancer rates are among the highest in the United States.
NCI-designated in 2013 and comprehensive since 2023, Markey is the only NCI centre in Kentucky, a state with some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality in the US, concentrated in Appalachian counties. Its research and outreach are built around that burden: lung cancer screening and tobacco control, colorectal screening uptake, HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention. The Markey Cancer Center Research Network and Affiliate Network extend trials and specialist care to community hospitals across the state. Basic science strengths include cancer metabolism and DNA damage.
