MUSC Hollings Cancer Center
South Carolina's only NCI-designated cancer centre, known for tobacco control, colorectal cancer prevention science and lipid signalling research.
NCI-designated since 2009, Hollings Cancer Center at the Medical University of South Carolina is the state's only NCI centre and covers a catchment with pronounced rural and racial disparities. Director Raymond DuBois's work on COX-2 and prostaglandins in colorectal cancer established a basis for aspirin and NSAID chemoprevention, and the centre's sphingolipid signalling programme (built by Yusuf Hannun and Lina Obeid) is internationally known. Hollings runs statewide tobacco cessation and lung screening programmes, a strong head and neck cancer service, and proton therapy through MUSC Health. It participates in NCI cooperative group trials and runs an early-phase unit.
