Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine / Osaka University Hospital
Japanese national university whose medical school led CheckMate 648 in oesophageal cancer and whose Immunology Frontier Research Center is home to Shimon Sakaguchi, discoverer of regulatory T cells.
Overview
Osaka University is one of Japan's leading research universities; its Graduate School of Medicine and University Hospital are on the Suita campus north of Osaka. The Department of Gastroenterological Surgery, under Yuichiro Doki, led CheckMate 648, the 2022 trial that established nivolumab-based first-line treatment for advanced oesophageal squamous-cell carcinoma. The Immunology Frontier Research Center (IFReC) hosts Shimon Sakaguchi, who discovered regulatory T cells and the role of FOXP3, work that underlies much of cancer immunotherapy. The Osaka International Cancer Institute is a separate prefectural cancer centre in the city.
