Shanghai's leading general hospital and a world centre for liver cancer surgery and research, home of the Liver Cancer Institute.
Zhongshan Hospital, founded in 1937, houses Fudan University's Liver Cancer Institute, which under Zhao-You Tang pioneered subclinical hepatocellular carcinoma detection with alpha-fetoprotein screening and small-HCC resection, and under Jia Fan and Jian Zhou continues to lead in liver transplantation for HCC, downstaging and conversion therapy, and circulating tumour cell research. The hospital is also strong in colorectal liver metastasis surgery, endoscopic resection of early gastrointestinal cancers and thoracic surgery, and its investigators contributed to the Chinese HCC immunotherapy trials. It is a national clinical research centre for interventional medicine.
