In osteosarcoma, a personalised blood test for leftover cancer after surgery predicted who would relapse, sometimes months before scans.
Of 83 patients with osteosarcoma at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, tumour-informed panels from whole-exome sequencing were obtained for 71 (85.5 per cent); 59 had panels and blood samples. Thirteen had ctDNA detected after surgery. Negative postoperative ctDNA was associated with better event-free survival at each time point studied and was a significant predictor in multivariate analysis; ctDNA preceded positive imaging in five patients by an average of 92.6 days.
Residual disease blood tests extend to bone sarcoma. The methods state a variant allele frequency limit of 0.01 per cent.
