Diagnosed with neuroblastoma before her first birthday, she set up a lemonade stand at four to raise money for her hospital. By her death at eight in 2004 it had raised $1 million; the foundation in her name has raised hundreds of millions since.
Alex Scott (1996-2004) of Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, was diagnosed with neuroblastoma shortly before her first birthday. In 2000, aged four, after a stem cell transplant, she told her parents she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to give the money to her doctors so they could help other children. The stand became an annual event copied across the country, and by the time she died on 1 August 2004, aged eight, it had raised $1 million. Her parents, Liz and Jay Scott, formalised Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation in 2005. It has since raised well over $250 million and become one of the largest private funders of childhood cancer research in the United States, supporting early-career investigators, clinical trials and the Childhood Cancer Data Lab.
