After her husband Robert was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in 1987 at 46, she turned the family's fortune to Northwestern's cancer centre, which carries his name, and to the children's hospital that carries both.

Ann Lurie (1944-2024) trained as a nurse and married the Chicago real-estate investor Robert H. Lurie, who, as Northwestern's cancer centre records, was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer in 1987 at the age of 46; he died in 1990. What Robert and Ann did following his diagnosis, the centre says, has been transformative: the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, an NCI-designated comprehensive centre where more than 18,000 people a year receive a new cancer diagnosis, bears his name, as does the Robert H. Lurie Medical Research Center, and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago bears both. Amounts for the gifts are not stated on the centre's page and are not repeated here. She later funded health and education work in Kenya and Ethiopia.
