Overview
Professor Jonathan Benger is Chief Executive of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), the English body that produces clinical guidelines and appraises the cost effectiveness of new treatments, including cancer drugs. He joined NICE in January 2023 as Chief Medical Officer, became interim director of the centre for guidelines in March 2023, was appointed deputy chief executive in May 2024 and chief executive in December 2025. Earlier he was interim chief clinical information officer at NHS England, Chief Medical Officer of NHS Digital and national clinical director for urgent and emergency care.
