Medical oncologist from Gipuzkoa who became President of GEICAM, Spain's academic breast cancer research group, in 2025 on the retirement of its founder Miguel Martín.
Overview
Ander Urruticoechea is President of GEICAM (Grupo Español de Investigación en Cáncer de Mama), the Spanish academic breast cancer research group. He took over the presidency in 2025 following the retirement of Miguel Martín, who had led the group for some 30 years after founding it with other oncologists. He is a medical oncologist at the Unidad de Oncología de Guipúzcoa (Osakidetza, the Basque health service) and a researcher at the Biogipuzkoa Health Research Institute. In a May 2025 interview he set out the challenge of sustaining academic breast cancer research without public funding and said he favours shared rather than single-person models of leadership.
