The Royal Marsden thoracic oncologist, now its chief medical officer, who has been an investigator on most of the UK trials that put targeted drugs into lung cancer practice.
Sanjay Popat has been a consultant medical oncologist at The Royal Marsden since 2007 and was appointed its chief medical officer in 2026; he has been Professor of Thoracic Oncology at the Institute of Cancer Research since 2019. His listed specialism is lung cancer. He qualified MBBS at the University of London in 1994 with triple distinction and a first-class BSc in experimental pathology, took a PhD in molecular genetics in 2002 and a post-doctoral fellowship in somatic genomics.
He is a named investigator on the National Lung Matrix Trial and on the REFINE-Lung and HALT trials, and is one of the clinicians who led the systemic therapy timed pathway inside the National Optimal Lung Cancer Pathway.
