Sidney Kimmel
The Jones Apparel founder has given $157 million to Johns Hopkins since 2001, which named its cancer centre for him, and put $50 million into the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy in 2016.
Overview
Sidney Kimmel built Jones Apparel Group and turned much of the proceeds to cancer research through the Sidney Kimmel Foundation for Cancer Research. Johns Hopkins records that since 2001 he has contributed $157 million and that in recognition it named the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center after him; a further $2.4 million funded the Kimmel Scholars programme for twelve young cancer scientists. In 2016 he gave $50 million alongside Michael Bloomberg's $50 million to found the Bloomberg~Kimmel Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy. Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia renamed its medical college and cancer centre for him after a 2014 gift. His foundation's Kimmel Scholar awards, given nationally to early-career investigators, are a model for funding people rather than projects.
