The neuroblastoma response criteria combine the primary tumour, any spread to bone or soft tissue, and the bone marrow into one overall response for a child's treatment.
The 2017 revision (Park and colleagues, Journal of Clinical Oncology), from an NCI clinical trials planning meeting with investigators from 13 countries, integrates response in the primary tumour, soft tissue and bone metastases, and bone marrow. Soft tissue sites are assessed with RECIST and MIBG scans, or FDG PET if the tumour does not take up MIBG; MIBG or FDG PET replaces bone scintigraphy for bone disease; marrow is assessed by histology and cytology, with 5% or less involvement classed as minimal disease; urinary catecholamines are no longer used. Overall response is complete, partial, minor, stable or progressive.
