The Choi criteria judge whether a gastrointestinal stromal tumour is responding to imatinib by small falls in size or in density on CT, because these tumours often stop growing and go quiet without shrinking much.
RECIST is insensitive in GIST treated with imatinib. Choi and colleagues (Journal of Clinical Oncology 2007) compared CT with FDG PET in 40 patients: a fall in tumour size of more than 10% or in tumour density of more than 15% on CT identified PET responders with 97% sensitivity and 100% specificity, against 52% and 100% for RECIST. Good responders on CT at two months had a longer time to progression.
