The 1999 EORTC recommendations were the first agreed rules for measuring a tumour's response by the change in sugar uptake on a PET scan.
The EORTC PET study group met in Brussels in 1998 and 1999 (Young and colleagues, European Journal of Cancer 1999) and set common criteria for measuring FDG uptake and reporting its change with treatment, so that small trials and large multicentre ones could be compared and subclinical response could be used in early drug trials. PERCIST later built on them.
