The trial that showed anlotinib helps patients with lung cancer live longer after other treatments have failed, the basis of one of China's most used cancer pills.
Overview
439 patients randomised 2:1. Median overall survival 9.6 versus 6.3 months (hazard ratio 0.68) and progression-free survival 5.4 versus 1.4 months; published in JAMA Oncology 2018. NMPA approval May 2018. Anlotinib went on to approvals in sarcoma, small cell lung cancer and thyroid cancer and to dozens of combination trials with domestic PD-1 antibodies.
- Median 9.6 vs 6.3 months with Anlotinib compared with Placebo; about 3.3 months longer for half the group.
- A median is a midpoint: half the people did better than this and half did worse, so it is not a prediction for any one person.
- Put another way, the treated group had about 32 percent lower chance of the event at any given time (hazard ratio 0.68).
- Overall survival counts deaths from any cause, so it is the most direct measure of whether a treatment helps people live longer.
- These results apply to the people the trial enrolled: Advanced NSCLC after at least two lines of therapy, China: anlotinib vs placebo. People in a different situation may not see the same effect.
