Hemithoracic irradiation with proton therapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma (UCL)
The trial asking whether proton beams can deliver radiotherapy to the whole lining of one side of the chest in mesothelioma without the collateral damage that has kept hemithoracic radiotherapy out of routine care.
Overview
Radiotherapy to the entire hemithorax has repeatedly failed to help mesothelioma patients because the dose needed hits the heart, the remaining lung and the liver. Proton therapy stops sharply at a set depth, so it can cover the pleural surface with far less dose behind it. This University College London study, registered as NCT05655078 and recruiting since March 2024 with 148 patients planned, tests hemithoracic proton beam therapy in malignant pleural mesothelioma. It is the only proton therapy trial in mesothelioma on the registry.
