India's largest biopharmaceutical company, founded by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw in 1978, and the parent of Biocon Biologics, which makes low-cost copies of the antibodies trastuzumab and bevacizumab.
Overview
Biocon was founded in Bengaluru in 1978 by Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw and grew from enzymes into generic active ingredients, insulins and antibodies. Its oncology footprint runs through Biocon Biologics (biosimilars) and Syngene (contract research). Biocon launched ALZUMAb (itolizumab, an anti-CD6 antibody) for psoriasis in 2013 and CANMAb, a trastuzumab biosimilar, in India in 2014 after CDSCO approval; Roche contested the approval and the litigation ended in 2016. With Mylan (now Viatris) it took the same molecule to the US as Ogivri, approved in December 2017, the first trastuzumab biosimilar approved by the FDA, and to the EU in December 2018. Biocon also sells a bevacizumab biosimilar in India (Krabeva) and, as Abevmy, in the EU (April 2021).
