Neutron Therapeutics
Neutron Therapeutics makes a compact particle accelerator that produces the neutron beam needed for boron neutron capture therapy, a form of radiotherapy that targets cancer cells one at a time, so hospitals no longer need a nuclear reactor to offer it.
Overview
Neutron Therapeutics, founded in November 2015 with roots in MIT technology, builds nuBeam, an accelerator-based neutron source for boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). It pairs a patented electrostatic proton accelerator (nominal 30 mA at 2.6 MeV) with a rotating solid lithium target to produce an epithermal beam designed to meet IAEA recommendations. The first nuBeam suite is at Helsinki University Hospital, where a full treatment workflow was completed in 2022; a second system at Shonan Kamakura General Hospital in Japan produced its first beam in January 2023, and a research accelerator was accepted at the University of Birmingham in December 2023. In 2023 the company partnered with boron drug developer Aviko Radiopharmaceuticals and with Leo Cancer Care. nuBeam is investigational and not FDA or PMDA approved. No financing round could be sourced.
Notes
top- Danvers, MA taken from company press release datelines; the Dec 2023 release was datelined Boston. Business Wire copies of the Helsinki and Aviko releases returned HTTP 403, so those milestones are cited to the company's own news page listing. No funding or investor information found in primary sources; stage set to startup by default. Whether patients have been treated clinically at Helsinki could not be confirmed.
