Sun Pharmaceutical Industries
India's largest drug company, which owns the branded cancer drugs Odomzo and Yonsa in the US and bought the PD-L1 antibody maker Checkpoint Therapeutics in 2025.
Overview
Sun Pharma was founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi and is the fourth-largest specialty generics company in the world, with revenue of about 52,600 crore rupees in 2025. Its oncology strategy mixes generics (it was among the first US generic launchers of imatinib in 2016) with branded specialty products: it acquired Odomzo (sonidegib, for basal cell carcinoma) from Novartis in 2016, won FDA approval of Yonsa (a fine-particle abiraterone acetate) on 23 May 2018, and in 2025 acquired Checkpoint Therapeutics for about 355 million dollars, gaining the anti-PD-L1 antibody cosibelimab (Unloxcyt, FDA-approved for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma in December 2024). In India it sells a broad oncology generics range.
