Fluoroestradiol F-18 (FES PET)
A PET scan that shows which breast cancer deposits still have oestrogen receptors, helping decide whether hormone therapy will work when biopsy is impractical.
Approved May 2020 as an adjunct to biopsy in recurrent or metastatic ER+ breast cancer. Predicts endocrine responsiveness and reveals heterogeneous ER loss; entered NCCN guidelines 2024. Also used in trials of ER degraders (PET occupancy) and in ER+ ovarian/endometrial research.
