A blood centre linked to the University of São Paulo's medical school in Ribeirão Preto that builds Brazil's own CAR-T cell therapy for leukaemia and lymphoma, aiming at a product the public health system can afford.
The Fundação Hemocentro de Ribeirão Preto was created in 1990 and is linked to the Hospital das Clínicas of the University of São Paulo's Ribeirão Preto Medical School. Its own page describes it supplying blood to a third of São Paulo state, more than 249 municipalities and over 7 million people, with research lines centred on stem cells and their clinical use.
Its cell therapy group made an academic CD19-directed CAR-T cell (HD37 clone, 4-1BB costimulatory domain) and treated 20 people with relapsed or refractory B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (13) or B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (7) between 2019 and 2023 at the Ribeirão Preto and São Paulo university hospitals, reported in Bone Marrow Transplantation in 2024. The centre's page says ANVISA chose it for a pilot project in developing advanced therapy products, and the phase 1/2 trial CARTHEDRALL (NCT06101381) aims to enrol 81 patients. Production is at the Núcleo de Terapia Avançada (Nutera RP), built with the Instituto Butantan; with a São Paulo unit, the two centres are planned to treat more than 300 patients a year, and the centre states more than R$200 million was invested in them. In June 2026 Butantan, the Hemocentro, the University of São Paulo and FAPESP signed an agreement to take the same technology into lupus and myasthenia gravis.
In October 2026 the Hemocentro's director-president, Rodrigo Calado, argued with Phillip Scheinberg that the national CAR-T will reach SUS patients only if treating centres in different regions are trained now, starting from bone marrow transplant teams.
