Indian Institute of Technology Bombay
The engineering institute whose bioscience department, with Tata Memorial, built India's first home-grown CAR-T cell therapy and spun it out as ImmunoACT.
Overview
IIT Bombay, founded in 1958 on a 545-acre campus at Powai, is one of India's leading technical universities. Its Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering hosts the laboratory of Rahul Purwar, where research on a humanised CD19 CAR-T construct began in 2013; the programme partnered with Tata Memorial Centre and ACTREC for clinical development, was spun out as ImmunoACT in 2018, dosed its first patients at Tata Memorial Hospital in 2021 and won India's first CAR-T approval (NexCAR19, talicabtagene autoleucel) in 2023. The institute also works on cancer imaging, medical devices and computational biology.
