Landspítali, the National University Hospital of Iceland, is the country's main hospital and the centre for specialised cancer diagnosis and treatment for a population of under half a million people, with a history going back to 1930. It works with the University of Iceland and refers some rare or highly specialised treatment abroad, mainly to the Nordic countries.
